Almost a year has passed since many have seen the man known as Terry Dane. Though he has wrestled in many shacks, barns, flea markets, and even a car dealership, he has been out of the public eye since the close of SCORE. Terry has been busy. He has a wife, Ginevra, and a young son, Tommy. He has been working as a DJ in a low wattage radio station in Kansas City. Playing old Red Sovine and Tom T. Hall albums is not where he thought he’d be right now. As happy as he with his family, Terry had been down until he got the call from Patrick Martin.
Scene from several months ago. A fairly nice apartment in the Kansas City, Mo. area. Phone rings. We see Terry Dane rush into the room, young Tommy in his arms, as he attempts to catch it before it stops ringing.
Terry- Hello?
Caller- Can I speak to Terry Dane?
Terry- (Trying to speak over the now crying Tommy.) You got him.
Caller- Terry, this is Patrick Martin. You may remember me from my association with Brent Kersh and his tournament last year.
Terry- Yes, Mr. Martin, I-(Tommy james his hand into Terry’s eye and he winces)- remember you. What can I do for you?
Martin- Terry, We are putting together a new show in Texas called The Wrestling Domain. We’d really like to bring you in. The money isn’t big, but you’ll own your merch and can make some money from it. We do reserve the right to pull that and pay you a percentage should TWD takes off, but you’ll make more as we grow.
Terry pauses. A chance to be with a steady, bigger promotion again. Terry gets excited.
Martin – Terry, are you there?
Terry- Yeah, sorry. Uh, my son distracted me. Um-When are the shows going to be booked?
Martin- We are still working the details, but every other Saturday.
Terry realizes that he works every weekend for the radio station. He sighs.
Terry- Mr. Martin, I’m sorry, but I have to pass.
Martin- Look, I know it’s going to be a drive at times, but we will cover gas as well. We might get you some other bookings around the area to make more money, too.
Terry- It’s not that. I just can’t work the schedule.
Martin- Terry, every two weeks is a very light schedule. We are even working an idea where it might be once a month or less for each wrestler.
As Terry is turning Patrick Martin down, his wife Ginevra, comes by and starts to listen in.
Terry- I’m sorry, but my job requires me to be there every Saturday. I simply can’t afford to risk it.
Martin- Well, can’t say I’m not disappointed. You have a great work rate and the crowd loves you.
Terry- I appreciate that, Mr. Martin. I just can’t.
Martin- Let me give you my number and you can call me back if you change your mind.
As Terry tries to hold the phone with his shoulder and head, hold his son, and get something to write with, his wife looks at him with sadness. She knows he’s turning down a great chance for his family. She lets out a sigh as he hangs up the phone.
Terry- Oh, I didn’t know you were there, Ginny.
Ginevra- Why did you turn down a chance to wrestle?
Terry- Ginny, you know I have to be at the station every weekend. It’s my job. It’s what keeps us in this apartment. We’re lucky to have this place and I’m lucky to be making the money I am there.
Ginevra- Terry, you aren’t making that much at the radio station. You could be working a regular weekday job and bring in the small amount a wrestling show would bring and be making more in the long run.
Terry- Sure, then I wouldn’t every get to be with you or Tommy.
Ginevra- Oh, Bullshit, Terry! I heard enough to know the cards are twice a month! Why are you denying yourself another chance?
Terry- It’s a pipe dream, Ginny! I was a fool to think I could make a living from it! I spent months after Rush shut down SCORE trying to get booked elsewhere! All I could get was working fat, badly trained 40 year old guys who thought they were Ric Flair!
Ginevra- Terry, I don’t know who you were talking to, but if they are offering you a chance to do better than wrestling the Moose Lodge’s head moose then you need to take the chance!
Terry- I can’t risk it, Ginny! What if I can’t find another job to supplement? With the way things are, it’s a possibility! Jerry, the station manager, says he’s very happy with my ratings and the job I’m doing.
Ginevra- Terry Dane, don’t you make Tommy and me the crutch for your fears! I thought I married a stronger man than that! You aren’t the man that Tom Stone took under his wing! He would be so disappointed!
Before Terry Dane could respond, Ginevra grabbed little Tommy and huffed out of the room. Terry Dane sighed and plopped down in a chair, holding his head.
