So, here's something I'd like some feedback on. I'm not sure if I'm a scumbag or a martyr or somewhere in between.
I've been working at my current job for about ten months. I work in a pizza parlor/medium size italian diner. Before that I was a manager at a take and bake pizza joint (hint, we don't bake them, you do). Anyway-
In my 10 mos. there I've seen several labor laws violated (keeping in mind I live in California, where we crack the fuck down on labor violations). For example:
Minors working more than 4 hours on a school night.
Minors working past 10 on a school night.
Minors operating delivery vehicles.
Minors operating the store (which serves open container alcohol) without supervision.
Minors operating belt driven machinery (the pizza oven)
15 y/o working out of the view of the public.
No breaks, ever. Period. For anyone.
And these are just the ones I know. Also:
There is no food waste. I come in from two days off and find sun dried tomatoes (red) that look like artichoke hearts (pale yellow). We use 4-7 day old dough (which thanks to yeast only lasts 2 days tops). There is no food waste that I know of.
Now then, four months ago I asked for a raise and in return I brought all of these things and more to the attention of my employer, which didn't have a manager in the store at the time. I was pretty much pointing out that I wanted the manager position, but wanted help from ownership to fix these problems.
The owners are a couple of shit kicking honkies, and the wife is the real owner/operator as the husband is an owner in name only. She's currently nine months pregnant, but was only around five at the time I brought all of these things to her attention. Needless to say, the did absolutely nothing about any of the issues I'd raised and named someone else the manager of the store (the owner's cousin, as it turns out)
Well, last week I turned her in to the labor board for these violations, filed a claim for the no breaks (which entitles me to one hour of pay for every break withheld) and put in my two week notice and began looking for a new job. Thank God I found one right away.
Now the shit has started. The owner has called me a backstabber and began spreading shit around the store to make me miserable while I work there, turning all the other employees against me. Sweet deal really...
Am I a scumbag for not just going quietly? I feel I did the right thing as this place was basically a sweat shop for the owner's hillbilly friends to come and eat at/destroy.
I'd like some perspective....
